Tips

What to do if your fibreglass brass felt comes loose?

This can indeed occur sooner or later in the life of the felt. This certainly does not mean that your felt is worn out or needs to be replaced. With a little maintenance, it can be easily fixed and you can continue to use this felt for years to come!
Whether the felt comes loose depends on how you use it and the temperature at which you cook. Whereas standard felt needs to be replaced every year or two, you may need to reattach the new felt once with heat-resistant silicone, after which it will no longer come loose. I always use Permatex Ultra Copper. It is best to do this maintenance on the felt before it comes off completely, as it is more difficult to replace once it has shrunk after use. If it does come off completely, stretch the felt by pulling it open, but be careful not to do this where the ends of the felt are attached. Always clean and degrease the ceramic surface thoroughly first. Then apply silicone over the entire surface and stick the felt back on. Then close the kamado and leave it closed for at least 48 hours. Do this when it is not too cold or damp outside, or place it indoors for a while. I usually tighten the lid extra (this can be adjusted via the closure) so that the felt is under a lot of pressure. Once glued back in place, the felt will not come loose again.

How do I maintain my grill grates?

For both stainless steel and cast iron grill grates, it is a good idea to place your grate in the kamado at the highest position when lighting it. This allows your grate to preheat and makes it easier to clean. When your kamado has reached the right temperature, clean the grate with the Brass BBQ Brush and coat it with peanut or rice oil. It is most convenient to put the oil in a squeeze bottle so that you can easily spray some oil onto a piece of kitchen paper.
After you have finished cooking, remove all food residues again with the Brass Brush, but this time use Care Spray to spray the grill. This spray contains carnauba wax and several natural oils that form a strong natural protective layer due to the residual heat in your kamado. This layer prevents rust and also acts as a non-stick coating. Remove any excess spray with kitchen paper and then leave your grill in the kamado so that the layer can harden. You can also use Care Spray before cooking, but doing it this way will save you 50% of your spray.
PS: Care Spray is also excellent for treating all your cast iron skillets and pans.

What should I watch out for with my heat shields?
  • Ensure that your charcoal does not touch the shields. Charcoal can reach temperatures of over 700 degrees, which heat shields cannot withstand.
  • Heat shields are porous. Therefore, do not allow them to get wet, as they will absorb water. This can cause them to crack when heated.
