Treating cast iron accessories and grates
All our cast iron is pre-seasoned, meaning it has already been treated with natural oils. Nevertheless, we recommend giving your cast iron an additional treatment.
This can be done before first use, but also at a later stage.
This extra treatment creates a stronger protective layer against rust and makes the cast iron more pleasant to useāespecially if you lightly sand the surface beforehand with fine sandpaper.
Step 1
Light the kamado (with heat deflectors) and bring it to a temperature of 200Ā°C (390Ā°F).
- Step 2
Remove any loose rust using a Brass BBQ Brush or a Cast Iron Scrubber.
- Use the brass brush for grates.
- Use the Cast Iron Scrubber for griddles, pans, woks or Dutch Ovens.
Tip: For new cast iron, it is recommended to lightly sand the entire surface with fine sandpaper.
- Step 3
Place the cast iron in the kamado and allow it to heat up for 5 minutes.
- Step 4
Open the kamado and spray the Cast Iron Care Spray onto the cast iron.
Wipe the the item thoroughly and then remove any excess oil with a dry cloth. Only a very thin layer of oil should remain.
Applying too much oil will result in a shiny, sticky finish.Tip: Always place pans or bowls upside down in the kamado.
- Step 5
Allow the cast iron to season in the BBQ for 1 hour at 200Ā°C (390Ā°F).
- Step 6
Repeat steps 4 and 5 another 3 to 4 times. The more layers you apply, the better the final result.
Step 1
Light your kamado and allow the grate or accessory to heat up along with it.
- Step 2
Before cooking, clean the grate using a Brass BBQ Brush.
- Step 3
Before cooking, use peanut oil to treat the grates and accessories. This helps save on the Care Spray.
The easiest method is to fill a squeeze bottle with peanut oil. Apply some oil to paper towel and rub it onto the grate or accessory. This also cleans the cast iron before cooking. - Step 4
After use, repeat the same process using the Cast Iron Care Spray.
- Step 5
After oiling, leave the grate or accessory in the residual heat of the kamado so the natural oil can season properly.
š Pans, Dutch Ovens, woks and other cast iron accessories should not be washed with soap.
